Help for Male Victims of Domestic Violence
Men can be victims of domestic violence, too, and it is important they know there are resources tailored specifically to their needs.
According to the Bay Area-based Family Violence Treatment and Education Association (FAVTEA), millions of American men are physically abused by a partner each year, yet many do not report it for fear of appearing weak or not being taken seriously. FAVTEA offers an online brochure and other resources for male victims, detailing the signs of domestic abuse, how men usually cope with abuse, and what men can do about the abuse.
The California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (CPEDV) website offers county-by-county victim hotlines and safety strategies for leaving an abusive relationship. CPEDV also tracks California legislation and offers annual training programs.
Stop Abuse for Everyone (SAFE) provides resources, publications and training to people who often 'fall between the cracks' of domestic violence services such as heterosexual and gay men. A national organization headquartered in Oregon, SAFE offers online support groups, reading lists and much more.
Another national nonprofit organization, An Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence Aid and Resource Collection (AARDVARC), offers online victim resources searchable by state. The AARDVARC website includes descriptions of court processes and the legal system, statistics on violence against men, and a bookstore.
